Maine Lottery winners don’t expect lives to change

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Linda and Bob Von Oesen of Fairfield, Maine, may have won an $8.2 million jackpot, but it certainly isn’t going to their heads. At the press conference at the Maine State Lottery office announcing the win, journalists pressed repeatedly for ways the Von Oesens might spend the money, and what luxuries they might purchase.

The answer was always the same: buy a new snow blower, so their cocker spaniel, Abby, would have an easier time getting around their property in the winter. They’re establishing trust funds in the names of their children. Linda planned to make a donation to her church. Other than that, nothing out of the ordinary.

New vehicle? They’d planned to buy one this year anyway. Chase an unfulfilled dream? Linda Von Oesen said she’d already achieved the dreams of her youth. Travel around the world? “I was in the service, so I had all the cruising I wanted,” replied Bob Von Oesen. “[Linda] doesn’t like to fly, so we’ll stick to four wheels.”
