Officials from the New Hampshire Lottery today announced that eight postal workers from New London have come forward to claim the $200,000 winning jackpot from a September 11 drawing.
The eight winners – Carl Gissler, Karen Willis and Toni Lopez of New London NH; Marilyn Bullis and Kandy King of Newport, NH; Oliver Fayton of Newbury NH; Becky Newcomb of Croydon, NH and Charles Weinstein, Jr. of Sunapee, NH – entered what they thought was their routine weekly office Lottery pool.
However, when Karen Willis visited the Lottery headquarters to claim what she thought was the group’s modest $5,000 winnings, she quickly found out that group had actually won $200,000!
Floored by the news, Willis said she “burst into tears” upon telling the group that they had won the $200,000 prize. Each member of the group won $25,000 before taxes.
"We're very happy for the eight winners," said NH Lottery Executive Director Charlie McIntyre. "We're even happier that their winnings were even more than they had bargained for!"
Willis, along with the seven winners, contributes $2 every week towards their Powerball ticket purchases regardless of the jackpot level, buying 8 tickets per drawing. This week, the group struck it big with the $200,000 win. The ticket was sold by Hannaford Grocery Store in New London, NH.
